Meetings

DapperSanta

It’s that time of year again!  The weather is cold, the snow has begun to fall, and it’s time for our annual 3DPPVD holiday party. Join us this Wednesday (December 14th) at Ocean State Maker Mill to attend what has become over the last five years our biggest event of the year. There won’t be a speaker this month – instead we will be firing up some of the printers and other digital fabrication equipment to make holiday ornaments. We will have some snacks and refreshments (feel free to bring something but don’t think it’s necessary).

Ocean State Maker Mill is located at 80 Fountain street, Pawtucket, RI 02860 and the doors will open at 7pm. We’ll be partying in the upstairs space, #318.  Don’t worry if you need to come a little late though, we will keep the party going!

For someone interested in getting started in 3D modeling, there are countless packages available to them in today’s world. There are high-end, expensive packages, free easy-to-learn basic tools, even scanner apps for your cell phone. Some of the more intriguing options, though, come from tools that don’t require you to install anything:  browser-based cad tools. Join us tonight, Wednesday November 9th 2016, to learn more about these online tools that can help you design your next project from anywhere. This meeting is free and open to anyone of any skill level. Doors will open at 7pm and we will be around into the evening to answer any 3D printing related questions you might have. As usual we will be meeting at Ocean State Maker Mill (80 Fountain Street, Pawtucket, RI 02860, Unit 318).

Ocean State Maker Mill’s newest member, Yongjae Kim, will join us as speaker for our October monthly meeting on Wednesday, October 12.  Yongjae is Founder and Creative Director of Sharemelon – a design group working within the Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket.

Yongjae’s work features ceramics slipcasting, (in which 3D printed designs are used to help create original artwork).  Yongjae and Sharemelon also do screenprinting, photography and more.

As always, this meeting is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 7pm at 80 Fountain Street, #318, Pawtucket, RI.  For those familiar with both of our workshop areas, we will be meeting in the upstairs space.  Discussion will start about 7:30pm.  Hope to see you there!

RacesMedium

The Ocean State Maker Mill team is hard at work preparing for this year’s Moat Boat Paddle Battle. The Moat Boat Paddle Battle is a race of 3D printed, elastic-powered boats that contestants design for competition at Maker Faire and was created by the Ocean State Maker Mill team. Come by this Wednesday (September 14th) to get a sneak peak of our new moats, boats, and plans.

As always this meeting is free and open to the public. Doors will open at 7pm at 80 Fountain Street, Pawtucket, RI. Park around back (corner of Blackstone and Middle) and look for the open entrance and sign. There is no formal presentation this time around so it’s a great time to meet the team and come with questions!

As 3D printing has grown more mature, we are getting better at modeling, better at running our printers, and our machines are developing also. Sites like Youmagine and Thingiverse are full of amazing models that are free for anyone to download and print on their own. The core 3DPPVD crew has been printing off lots of fun things and the Ocean State Maker Mill shop is full of them. This month, we would love to see more of what YOU have been printing!

Come by Ocean State Maker Mill at 7pm on Wednesday June 8th with some of your prints to show off to everyone. This event is free and open to everyone, if you are new to 3D printing and don’t have anything to show off, don’t worry, come see what others are making.

Doodler

3D printing pens can be useful tools and creative outlets. Broken prints can be fixed, objects can be drawn, two parts can be welded together, or art can be transformed from 2D into 3D. Just like there are different types of 3D printers, there are also different types of 3D printing pens. This month, we are going to have some fun exploring the potential of 3D printing pens. Join us Wednesday, May 11th at Ocean State Maker Mill at 7pm to draw like you’ve never drawn before. This event, like always, is free and open to the public.  We will have a variety of different pens available for everyone to try out, including the 3Doodler and CreoPop.

Printers

Much like your car needs maintenance from time to time, so do 3D printers. This month, we are going to take a little time to work on some of the printers that reside at Ocean State Maker Mill. We hope to get them back up into fine working order. We invite you to come hang out, ask questions, or bring in your own printer to work on getting it tuned up. This event is free and open to anyone with an interest in 3D printing. Don’t worry, it won’t be all tools and tech talk, we will have some of the working printers running jobs to show off the tech and members around to answer questions. We will be kicking things off at 7pm on Wednesday, April 13th at Ocean State Maker Mill (80 Fountain Street unit 318, Pawtucket, RI).

HangingOut

Come join us on Wednesday, March 3rd at 7pm to hang out and discuss all things 3D printing. Due to a scheduling issue, we don’t have a theme this month, but that just lends to more time to hang out and share ideas.  This event is free and open to anyone who is interested in 3D printing. As usual, we will be meeting at Ocean State Maker Mill (80 Fountain Street, Pawtucket, RI).  Bring along any 3D printing projects you would like to share with the group!

Desktop 3D printing is an amazing technology that is bringing new possibilities to our homes each and every day. Sometimes though, we come to a design that needs more detail, more complexity, or material capabilities that we just can’t create with desktop 3D printing. Getting access to the tools that big industry has can be daunting. Now, 3D Hubs, the largest 3D printer sharing community in the world, has teamed up with a few special hubs to introduce 3D Hubs HD. Find a hub globally that is capable of printing your design in the definition and materials you need, upload that design, and wait for Mr. Postman to deliver your item.  It’s that easy.

This month, we will be working in cooperation with 3D Hubs to show off what is possible with HD and how the service works. While the event is free to attend, this time around we have tickets for those who want to participate fully.

Ticket price for this event is $7.50 and includes:

  • Strong & Flexible SLS 3D Printing Workshop
  • Q & A
  • $20 3D Hubs HD print voucher (for your S&F Print)
  • Refreshments

Click here to purchase your tickets.

Doors for this event will open at 7pm at Ocean State Maker Mill and the talk will begin around 7:30. We hope to see you there!

RockingUkes

Over the past few months, the 3DPPVD and OSMM crew have been having a lot of fun 3D printing Ukuleles and some other musical instruments. 3D printing gives us the possibility to not only create playable instruments in a cost effective fashion, but also to be able to push the boundaries of what classic instruments are capable of. The range of available designs currently on the market offers tons of possibilities from string instruments to trumpets, percussion to bagpipes, you could print a pretty rocking band.

Come join us this Wednesday (1/13/16) starting at 7pm at Ocean State Maker Mill to try out a few 3D printed musical instruments, as well as explore what else is out there. Who knows, maybe we can come up with the next big thing!  This event is free and open to everyone.
